We were very lucky to be allowed to visit a food oil manufacturing facility on November 28th. On our visit, we were given a brief presentation on where food oils come from and how they are used. After that, we toured the facility, finishing with a tour of a margarine factory.
Because we were entering a food processing factory, we had very strict rules about cleaning ourselves. We had to wear lab coats, hair nets and shoe covers. We also had to vacuum ourselves, wash our hands for 30 minutes and go into a small room for an air shower! In an air shower, there are jets that blast air at you from different directions. You have to raise your arms in the air and turn around to let the shower do its work.
In the margarine factory, we watched tubs of butter and margarine being boxed up to go to warehouses. All the work was being done by machines and robots. It was very fast.
Everyone was very happy when the company treated us to snacks made with their cooking oils. It was a wonderful end to an exciting day. We deeply appreciated how helpful and welcoming the staff of Ueda Oils Manufacturing was to Grade 5/6.
