Grade 5 has been inquiring into shapes that are used in building designs for earthquake-safe buildings, and even went to Rink to see which shapes they could find supporting the structure. They created a cylinder, triangular prism, and rectangular prism, and tested how many books each shape could hold, concluding that cylinders are the strongest 3D shapes. Students then designed their own community evacuation centres that incorporated their findings from both 2D and 3D shapes!

We started the year by making class agreements in order to create a safe, comfortable learning atmosphere! First, students were put into two groups to brainstorm ideas that are important to them. Then, they came together as a whole class to discuss what they had written and elaborate on their ideas. After that, they organised and grouped the ideas they felt were the most important. The last step was to change the agreements into “We will” statements.
