In 1909, our school was founded as a German School in Kobe to serve German, Austrian and German speaking Swiss expatriates, traders and missionaries living in the area. After a long and proud history of teaching the German curriculum we changed our programme in 2002 and started offering classes in English through the Primary Years Programme (PYP). We felt our school’s identity and community was evolving to be more international and our change of programme reflected this.
In 2009 we started offering a native Japanese programme and Japanese as a foreign language alongside our German and English curriculums. This was another step in our school’s evolution in becoming a truly international trilingual school with our English programme gaining more and more popularity.
For more than 15 years we were operating and serving our community as a truly international school however we were still called the Deutsche Schule Kobe. Due to our international programme and growing international community we felt we needed a name and logo change in order to better reflect who we are as a school. After a lot of careful thought and deliberation we changed our name from the Deutsche Schule Kobe to DSK International. We are proud of our German heritage and this is still a core part of our identity, however moving forward we are excited to embrace our new logo and name as we feel it better represents the international education we are providing in Kobe.
Community is important. In 1909 we were a community for the German speaking expatriates and their growing Japanese connections and families to come together, learn and socialise.
Over our more than 100 year history our community has slowly grown to include and support students and families from all over the world. Our core community values of supporting each other, lifelong learning and enquiring about the world haven’t changed but our community has changed to become much more international.
While our community was changing and evolving over the years to become something special and truly international we felt our old name didn’t quite encapsulate our evolving identity. At DSK International, we are an open and accepting community and we welcome students and families from all over the world. We feel the our new name and logo sets the tone and helps to convey our international profile and community.
Our New Logo
When it came to designing and creating a new logo, it really was a community effort. The staff and the school board were heavily involved in the process from the first concept, to the final execution.
A creative teacher initially had the monogram idea. In the process of exploring this idea, we decided that we needed a look that would appeal to both girls and boys, and display a modern look that corresponds with the school's progressive agenda.
The result is a modern and open logo which represents the changing identity of the school while still paying homage to our history with the use of our original blue and yellow.
The New Website
Of course our identity is much more than a name and a logo. In order to better convey who we are and also to give our visitors a better experience we have redesigned our website too. The goal was to ensure people could find the information they were looking for easily, and also present our information in a style that reflects us: open, warm, progressive and fun.
We have added a few new core content pages such as languages at DSKI, What we Offer and our programmes overview page along with much more. We feel our new website conveys our growing international programme and gives potential new students and families a better sense of our values, education and programmes on offer.
We encourage you to explore or website and get to know us. If you would like to find out more about us, our community and the education we offer you are welcome to visit our school for a tour anytime.
Thank you for being a part of our journey!
Everyone at DSK International.
