For the end of our unit on culture, the Grade 1 and 2 students were tasked with creating a Cultural Mini-Museum to share with others what they had learnt about the similarities and differences between the different aspects of culture such as food, clothing, homes, stories, music/ instruments, games, sports, holidays and celebrations, etc.
The Grade 2 students began by choosing one aspect of culture to focus on and research. Then they had to choose at least 3 examples of items that they could actually get real examples of to display in our Mini-Museum. Once chosen, they needed to research about each item and write informative paragraphs about each one. Finally, they had to prepare all of the materials for their exhibit, collect the items, present their written paragraphs in a neat format as well as labels for each item, explaining what it was and who it was donated by.
Then our big day(s) arrived as we welcomed students and teachers at the end of the day on Thursday, December 14th and parents on the morning of the 15th. Our museum was a huge success, as the grade 1 and 2 students took ownership of their learning and shared it with others. The students had a great opportunity to show how knowledgeable they had become, and visitors had the chance to see what great researchers and curators the first and second grade students were! Great job grades 1 and 2!
