Grade One has been busy working on the transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet, where their inquiry took them to understanding the importance of the Earth’s resources. They looked at the glass making process in detail, beginning with sand. They were fascinated to learn that sand can turn into smooth glass.
As part of their learning, they have looked at trees and their importance. They made excellent connections and identified the crucial role that trees play in our lives; from helping keep the air we breathe clean all the way to providing the paper we use everyday at school.
Grade One, visited the Maishima Incineration Plant, as part of their unit on recycling. They were inspired by the colourful work of the famous artist and architecture, Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Students enjoyed the trip and were mesmerised by the mosaic towers that made the Incineration Plant look like a fairy tale castle. Intrigued by the design, Grade One wanted to learn more about the mastermind behind it. So, they embarked on their own Hundertwasser project, with students creating expressive self-portraits.
