On Wednesday, April 26 DESK held our first Learning Showcase. This was a chance for all of the students in the school from Early Years, up to to Middle Years to present different activities and projects from units throughout the school year to showcase all of the great learning that has been taking place. Each class had times to visit other classes, as well as times to present. The Preschool students enjoyed visiting other classes to see things that they might be doing in the next few years. They also showed a real interest in what the older classes, particularly Grade 5 and in Middle Years.
Then it was time for the Preschoolers to present to the other students and parents about what we have been doing this year. The students chose one activity or project from each of the 5 units that we have covered so far. For the Who We Are unit on Healthy Habits, some students chose to share and display their Healthy Habits books. For Where We Are in Place and Time, students challenged guests to build the tallest tower out of straws, much like they had built straw houses for little pigs! For our How We Express Ourselves unit on Celebrations, the students collected data in a graph about the visitors' favourite holidays or celebrations. For our unit on the local environment, under the transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet, the students presented the model of the playground they created. Finally, for our unit on How the World Works, students presented what they have been doing with planting and living things.
Throughout the Showcase, the students demonstrated how knowledgeable they have become and put to use their good communication and presentation skills. Good job Preschool!
