On Friday, December 1st, the Grade 2 students had a special guest teacher join them during PE time. Scarlett's dad, Andy Ellis joined the lesson in order to share a bit of New Zealand/ Kiwi culture with us. Many of the students were already familiar with the 'Haka' but left with a deeper understanding as Andy took the time to explain what some of the words and actions meant. As a former member of the famous All Blacks team, Andy shared his knowledge not only of the Maori's Haka, but also about the most popular sport in New Zealand, rugby!
The students had a great time practicing rugby skills such as passing, catching and kicking the ball as well as playing the game of Bullrush with Andy. It was a great opportunity for us to collaborate not only with a parent, but also to make connections between our unit of inquiry and with the P.E. teacher, Mr. Waite. Everyone was so involved and had a lot of fun! I know of at least one student who has become a rugby fan thanks to Andy's visit! He even went out to cheer on Andy and the Kobe Steelers at their last home game of the season this past Saturday! Andy even donated a couple rugby balls to the school, so Mr. Waite can start training everyone in preparation for the Rugby World Cup which will be held here in Japan in 2019!
