Each spring the Preschool, Grade 1 and 2 classes look forward to the annual Sleepover at school. This year was no different as the second-grade students started talking about the event about a month beforehand. Finally, the big day (and night) were upon us!
The students excitedly arrived back at school around 6 pm and promptly chose their sleeping spots next to friends and got their mattresses and things all set up. For some, this was their first time to sleep away from home, but for many in Grade 2, it was the second or third time to take part in the sleepover and the older students helped explain some of the night's events to the younger students.
After setting up their bedding we went over the schedule and expectations for the night and then joined Preschool and Grade 1 out on the playground for a bit of fun before dinner. The students did a great job helping peel and chop the vegetables for the salad. Each student had a job to do, whether it was peeling cucumbers, chopping carrots or ripping apart lettuce they all worked together and enjoyed eating it and some pizza too!
After watching two Magic School Bus episodes about Space during dinner time, the real fun part of the night began with Flashlight Tag outside on the playground, followed by Hide and Seek in the dark first floor of the school. Each class took turns as the hiders and seekers and the teachers even played a couple of rounds too! It was a bit scary moving about the school in the dark but luckily we had our flashlights on hand to light up our way!
Soon everyone was tired out (and it was getting a bit late as it had taken us longer to make the salad than we had originally planned) and it was time to get ready for bed. While Preschool and Grade 1 washed up and got ready for bed, Grade 2 snuck outside for a little late night stargazing! Luckily we had a clear night and could spot a few stars, the moon and even the planet Jupiter! After the moon and Venus, the third brightest object in the night sky is always Jupiter, which was just a week or so away from it's closest approach to the Earth this year which was on May 9th.
Once we were back in school, the Grade 2 students quickly got ready for bed and and listened to a bedtime story. Some students were worried that they wouldn't be able to sleep, but as soon as the lights went out in our room at 11:30, most students were already fast asleep!
Despite having gone to bed so late, most of the students were up bright and early the next morning! Thankfully they tried really hard to follow their teacher's instructions and didn't start making noise until 6:30!! Some read books, while others played with Lego, or board games with their friends.
Once we all crawled out of bed, we headed outside for a special playtime before breakfast. For breakfast we had some fruit, juice, cereal and ... birthday cake!! It was Hirohito's birthday, so his mom had prepared cake for EVERYONE!
After breakfast, we finished packing everything up and were ready for the start of another (albeit short) day!
