As part of our school philosophy of giving children hands-on experiences and combining it with our unit, the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children went on an exciting trip to the Peace and Nature Farm in Ozo.
Peace and Nature is an international NPO growing their own healthy food and organizing workshops even for very young children.
The children were very excited to learn in the wide open spaces around the old farm house. After listening attentively to an explanation about the workshop, they went on to pull out the biggest onions ever seen!
Shouts of delight could be heard when another huge onion was found and the wheelbarrow filled up very fast. We also harvested some fresh herbs !
The staff cut the onions and we cooked a delicious natural onion soup in a pot over a real Japanese oven (kama).
After some nourishing soup which complemented the home made bentos, the children helped to plant their own sansho pepper tree.
What would a trip into Japan’s beautiful country side and to the Peace and Nature Farm be without a lot of exploring?
So off the children went to find dango-mushi, drum on old sake barrels, find frogs in the ditches, and enjoy the view of the new rice sprouting in straight lines under a blue sky.
What a great day! And in the end lots of happy smiles and the best omiyage ever- a big, juicy onion to take back home !
